With Respect and Gratitude

This week I completed an online apprenticeship with the author of The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz and his sons don MIguel Jr., aka ‘Mikey’ and don Jose. The experience made me laugh, brought me to tears, and has left an indelible sense of Gratitude for the opportunity of working with the Ruiz family. I walk away with an increased level of awareness of myself and more appreciation for those in my life.

Over the years I have read dozens of books, attended many retreats and consumed countless hours of content on personal growth and self-improvement. Each of those experiences have been beneficial and provided new perspectives of the same topics. But at the end of the day, there are only a few that resonate with me on a deep level and that I return to time after time: Yoga, Nature, and The Four Agreements.

Yoga for strengthening my mind-body connection and awareness. Nature for providing an automatic reset button for releasing stress and anxiety. And the teachings of the Ruiz family for understanding my beliefs, patterns and habits that ultimately create the trajectory of my life.

Four little agreements. That’s it. The words are simple, but the work is not easy.

  • Be Impeccable with your words
  • Dont’ take anything personally
  • Don’t make assumptions
  • Always do your Best

If you study, embrace and follow them where ever they may lead, it can change your life. But its not an easy or quick process. I first read The Four Agreements about a decade ago and thought “this makes sense, I understand these agreements.” I returned the book to my shelf and soon returned to my old habitual patterns.
Fast forward several years and with the occurence of a major life event, I found my inner voice suggesting I pick up the book and read it again. This time, I was taken aback by its content and wisdom. I have since read The Four Agreements many times, each time discovering new meaning and depth that eluded me the first time I picked it up.

Nothing can change our perspective on things like Time. With the passage of Time and a shift in our perspective, there comes a point where we all desire deeper meaning and connection in our lives. The teachings of the Ruiz family help to provide that for me. Their words are simple, non-dogmatic, profound and universally applicable to everyone.

Thank you don MIguel, Mikey, and Jose. It has been a privilege to explore your families heritage and teachings on a deeper level and have the chance to interact with you during our live sessions. I am already looking forward to the next one.

Happy Hiking and Namaste!
